Stippling Myths... Debunked
Ethan with Defiant Machine Works:
"Hey there,
We've stippled a lot of grips. Along the way we've heard a lot of myths. Some from customers, some from other shops. Let's clear a few up.
Myth #1: "More aggressive = more grip."
Not always true. Past a certain point, aggressive texture just shreds your hands during a long range day and doesn't actually improve control. Good stippling is about pattern and placement, not just depth.
Myth #2: "Stippling weakens the frame."
When it's done right... controlled heat, controlled depth, leaving frame thickness where needed it doesn't touch the structural integrity of the polymer. This is why technique and experience matter more than the tool being used.
Myth #3: "All stippling patterns are the same."
They're not even close. Where texture is placed (and where it's deliberately left smooth) changes how the gun indexes in your hand under recoil. A good pattern is designed around how you actually grip, not just copied from a photo.
Myth #4: "You can just watch a YouTube video and DIY it."
You can. You can also mess up a $400+ frame permanently in about four minutes. We've fixed a few of those.
Grip work is one of those things that looks simple until you're the one holding the dremel and soldering iron. Luckily, I have held those for over 4 years now.
So if you are wanting to do stippling, but you haven't decided what you want yet. Feel free to reach out so I can help you choose what would fit your situation / use case best.
Stay safe and God bless,"
